James Haslett was born in 1773 in Ireland and died 1832 at Baltimore. He learned gun making in Europe. He was brought form Irland about 1798 expecially to serve as the shop foremanf for Robert McCormick. They made flintlock rifles for the state of Virginia. When McCormick went bankrupt in May 1801, John Clarke traveled around in search for workmen for the Virginia Manufacory of Arms, Richmond, Virginia. He suggested the governor of Virginia to recrut Haslett and persuaded the governor and Virginia official to agree to contract with Haslett for 600 muskets. All muskets were delivered early in 1802. Although many workmen of Haslett's manufactury went to Richmond, Haslett was disappointed in not being offered the position he sought at the manufactory. Initially he decided to stay in Philadelphia, getting himself appointed Inspector of Arms to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Governor McKean. Philadelphia Directory for 1803 list Haslett as gunmaker above 511 N. Second. Finally Haslett had changed his mind and moved to Baltimore in June 1803. His shop was first at 64 North Gay-Street. in 1804 he moved the shot to 4 Light Street and finally to 28 Water street in 1805. Where hw worked for 28 years. The address 22 Water Street seems being his home or the shop for the joint business with his son James Haslett Jr as a merchant grocer. During the War of 1812, Haslett was a U.S. Army officer of Maryland. After the war in 1815 he recommenced making firearms at his 28 Water Street shop. Federal Gazette & Baltimore Daily Advertiser of November 12, 1806. He offered dueling pistols made by himselves and others imported from London.
